Hyde was elected to the city council numerous times, and served as mayor of Detroit in 1854, 1856, and 1857.He was also appointed Collector for the Port of Detroit under presidents Zachary Taylor and Millard Fillmore.However, the fire of 1805 destroyed the town and effectively eliminated the government.Governor William Hull and Judge Augustus Woodward dissolved the original incorporation, replacing it in 1806 with a government headed by an appointed mayor.
After leaving the Army, he came to Detroit in 1836 and served in various positions, including both city and county physician, Regent of the University of Michigan, and three terms as mayor( 1840, 1841, and 1843).
Subsequent chairs were George Mc Dougall (1816–1817), Abraham Edwards (1817–1818), John R. Following approval by the state legislature, Williams became the City of Detroit's first elected mayor.

Subsequent elections were held in May of each year, chairmen of the Board of Trustees were James May (1803–1804), Solomon Sibley (1804–1805) and Joseph Wilkinson (elected 1805).
Brush served as a lieutenant colonel in the Territorial Militia, and was taken prisoner during the War of 1812; he died soon after returning to Detroit in 1814.
